Shingle FAQ.

Modern architectural asphalt shingles typically last 20–30 years in service. Manufacturers advertise longer — IKO covers Cambridge and Dynasty under a limited lifetime warranty — but a warranty term and a service life are not the same number, and we would rather tell you the one you will actually live with. Lifespan depends on shingle quality, installation standards, attic ventilation, and climate exposure. In the Okanagan, proper ventilation is critical to preventing premature aging.
Three-tab shingles are a single flat layer: cheaper, but lighter and easier for wind to lift. Architectural (laminate) shingles are two bonded layers with a textured look and a longer life. We only install architectural shingles.
A second layer over old shingles is sometimes possible, but we recommend a full tear-off: it lets us inspect the deck, lay new underlayment and avoid trapping moisture.
Quality architectural shingles paired with proper underlayment and ice and water shield at eaves handle Okanagan snow loads very well. The key is proper installation: correct nailing patterns, adequate ventilation to limit ice dams, and premium ice and water shield protection in valleys and at eaves.
Lighter colours reflect more heat than dark ones. The bigger gains come from attic ventilation and insulation, which we look at when we quote.
