Embers Travel

In the 2023 McDougall Creek fire, embers were carried more than 2.5 km, across Okanagan Lake, and embers, not flames, are how it got into the neighbourhoods (FireSmart BC). A fire-rated roof and mesh over the vents are what keep them out.

Fire-Rated Roofs Are in the Rules

In the city’s wildfire development permit area, the guidelines for new homes and large additions call for a roof covering rated Class A, B or C (West Kelowna Official Community Plan, s. 4.12). We’ll tell you where yours stands.

Yes. A Class A fire-rated roof, metal mesh over the vents, and keeping gutters and valleys clear of needles and leaves. The city’s wildfire development permit guidelines call for the same 3 mm mesh on vents (Official Community Plan, s. 4.12).
The City of West Kelowna offers a free FireSmart home assessment by West Kelowna Fire Rescue. It also runs a FireSmart grant for eligible work; check the city’s FireSmart page for this year’s funding and what qualifies.
